Add your first portal pages

In this tutorial, we’re going to add pages and a link to a portal, then rename, hide, and restore them from its navigation. A portal’s navigation is how your users move around it, so every page you add appears there. By the end, you’ll have a portal with a CMS page, an asset page, and a link, arranged and named the way you want.

Prerequisites

To follow this tutorial, you need:

What we’ll create

We’ll add a CMS page called Welcome and an asset page called Brand assets to Tutorial portal. Then we’ll add a link to an outside website, rename the asset page, and practise hiding and showing a navigation item.

The tutorial takes about 15 minutes, including the videos, in six steps:

Step 1: Open the navigation panel

Pages are added and arranged from the portal’s own navigation panel.

Open the navigation panel (44 s)

We’re going to open the panel for our portal.

  1. Open Tutorial portal.

  2. Select at the top right of the portal view.

The cog appears only for users who can edit the portal.

  3. Select Navigation.

The Manage Navigation panel opens on the right.

You’ll notice that a new portal has almost nothing in it yet. Every page we add appears in this list, in the order it appears to users.

Step 2: Add a CMS page

A CMS page is a free-form page that you build from sections and widgets. It’s the usual choice for a landing page or brand guidelines.

Add a page (2 min 5 s)

We’re going to add a welcome page.

  1. In the Manage Navigation panel, select + Add Page Item.

  2. Select CMS, then select Next.

  3. In Name, enter Welcome.

  4. In URL, enter welcome.

Enter only the end of the address, in lowercase and without spaces. A preview of the full address appears as you type.

  5. For the presentation style, select Horizontal (Dropdown).

  6. Leave Enable This Page selected.

  7. Select Save & Apply.

You’ll notice that:

  • Welcome appears in the Manage Navigation panel.

  • It also appears in the portal’s navigation bar.

The page is empty. We’ll build its content in the next tutorial.

The presentation style decides how sub-pages appear if you nest any under Welcome later: as a dropdown at the top, or as a sidebar.

Step 3: Add an asset page

An asset page is a listing page: instead of free-form content, it lists assets, and a lens decides which ones.

We’re going to add an asset page that lists assets through one of your lenses. The video in step 2 also covers this page type.

  1. Select + Add Page Item again.

  2. From the Listing Type menu, select Assets, then select Next.

  3. In Name, enter Brand assets, and in URL, enter brand-assets.

  4. Select Next.

  5. Select a lens from the list.

Lenses are listed by their domain.

  6. Leave the domain checkboxes selected.

  7. Select Save & Apply.

Open Brand assets from the portal navigation.

You’ll notice that:

  • The page lists assets straight away, without you adding any.

  • The assets are the ones your chosen lens selects.

That’s the difference between the two page types: you build a CMS page by hand, and a listing page fills itself from a lens. For further information, refer to Understanding lenses.

Not everything in a portal’s navigation has to be a page. A link sends users somewhere else, such as your company website.

Add a link (1 min)

We’re going to add a link under Welcome.

  1. In the Manage Navigation panel, open the Welcome page’s menu.

  2. Select Add Link.

  3. In Name, enter Our website.

  4. In URL, enter the full address of your organisation’s website, including https://.

  5. Leave the link enabled.

  6. Select Save & Apply.

You’ll notice that:

  • Our website appears under Welcome in the Manage Navigation panel.

  • In the portal navigation, Welcome now opens a dropdown, because it has a child item.

That dropdown is the Horizontal (Dropdown) presentation style we chose in step 2.

Step 5: Rename a page

Names and addresses can be changed after a page is created.

Edit a page (42 s)

We’re going to rename the asset page.

  1. Open the Brand assets page’s menu.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. In Name, enter Asset library.

  4. Leave the URL as it is.

  5. Select Save & Apply.

You’ll notice that the new name appears in the portal navigation immediately.

We kept the URL the same, so any links people already have to the page still work.

Step 6: Hide and show an item

Sometimes you need to take a page or link out of the navigation for a while, without losing it.

Hide, show, and delete navigation items (1 min 40 s)

We’re going to hide the link, check it’s gone, then bring it back.

  1. Open the Our website link’s menu.

  2. Select Hide.

Our website disappears from the portal navigation. In the Manage Navigation panel, it stays in the list, marked .

  3. Open the link’s menu again.

  4. Select Unhide.

You’ll notice that Our website is back in the portal navigation, in the same place as before.

The same menu also has Delete. Deleting is permanent: it removes the item and, for a page, its content and any pages nested under it. Use Hide whenever you might want an item back.

The finished navigation

Here’s what we’ve built in Tutorial portal:

  • Welcome: an empty CMS page, with Our website nested under it as a link.

  • Asset library: an asset page, renamed from Brand assets, listing assets through your lens.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, you’ve learned how to:

  • Open a portal’s navigation panel.

  • Add a CMS page and an asset page.

  • Add a link to an outside website.

  • Rename a page from its settings.

  • Hide and show a navigation item.

Next, continue with Build your first CMS page to fill the Welcome page with content.

Add pages to a portal and Manage portal navigation cover every navigation option, including reordering, page permissions, and other page types. Understanding portal pages and navigation explains how pages and navigation fit together.
