Create an adaptation

This page explains how to create a single adaptation from a published template, by filling in the template’s fields. To produce many adaptations at once instead, use Produce digital adaptations in batch.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

Open a template

You create adaptations in Content Portal, starting from a published template. Templates themselves are built and managed in the separate Adaptation Studio application, which you do not need for this task.

  1. Open Content Portal from the application switcher at the top left.

  2. From the left navigation, select Adaptations, then View Template.

  3. Select the All digital templates or All print templates tab, depending on the kind of adaptation you want.

The templates that appear belong to your current domain. To switch domain, select the Domain dropdown from the top right of the templates page, then choose another domain.

  4. Select a template to open its details panel, where you can preview it and read its description.

Then follow the steps for a digital template or a print template.

Create a digital adaptation

When you open a digital template, you create the adaptation in the Create Adaptation window, with a preview on the left and the template’s fields on the right.

  1. In the template’s details panel, select Create Adaptation, then Create Single.

To produce many adaptations at once instead, select Create Batch and follow Produce digital adaptations in batch.

  2. Fill in the fields on the right.

Each field corresponds to a parameter in the template, and required fields are marked with an asterisk. Fields can be dropdowns, free text, or image choices. For an image field, select one of the preset images, or select Custom Upload to use your own. The controls under the preview, such as Fit and Select Safezone, change only the preview, not the finished adaptation.

  3. Select Create Asset.

My Content opens, and the adaptation appears in the In Progress tab while it renders.

Next, continue with Find and download your adaptation.

Create a print adaptation

When you open a print template, you create the adaptation in a full-page editor, with the template’s fields in collapsible sections on the left and a live preview in the centre.

  1. In the template’s details panel, select Create Adaptation.

From the editor you can also start another adaptation from the same template with New, or reopen an existing adaptation with Open.

  2. Fill in the fields.

Expand a section to edit its fields. The sections depend on the template; for example, one may let you choose the output size.

The Scale control at the top right changes only how the preview is displayed, such as Fit Window or a fixed zoom from 25% to 200%. It does not change the size of the finished adaptation.
  3. Select Save, then Finish and Close.

If you have unsaved changes, Finish and Close prompts you to save first, because unsaved changes are lost. To download a high- or low-resolution PDF before you finish, select Download….

Next, continue with Find and download your adaptation.

Find and download your adaptation

Your finished adaptations are collected in My Content. To open it, select from the top right.

Digital and print adaptations have separate tabs, Digital Adaptations and Print Adaptations. Finished print adaptations appear under Print Adaptations, in the Adaptations tab.

While a digital adaptation is rendering, it appears in the In Progress tab with a Rendering status. When it finishes, it moves to the Complete tab.

To download a finished adaptation, select on it in the Complete tab. If Promote appears, the adaptation must be reviewed and approved before you can download it:

  1. Select Promote to move the adaptation into Files in My Content.

  2. From Files, send the adaptation for review.

  3. Once it is approved, download it from Files.

If Promote does not appear, you do not have permission to promote adaptations, and you can select Download directly instead. The full review process is covered in Promote adaptations and Create and run a review.

Troubleshooting

Problem: The adaptation shows as failed while rendering.

Solution: in the In Progress tab of My Content, select on the adaptation’s row, then select Recreate to try again, or Delete to remove it.
